Human Animals, a documentary by David Wachsman and Mhamad Babai (17 Sep, Kino Cinema Melbourne)
The Jewish Council of Australia is proud to present the Australian premiere of Human Animals, a new documentary from internationally acclaimed producer Mhamad Babai and director David Wachsmann.
An important documentary event, don’t miss out.
While Gaza experiences an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe with over 73,000 casualties, including more than 21,000 children, relatively normal life continues for Jewish Israelis. Human Animals moves between these two worlds. Through raw and powerful footage, it explores the reality of life in the strip, and of life in an Israeli city just kilometres away. In a series of remarkable interviews, the film exposes deep seated mechanisms of denial and normalisation by which ordinary citizens live in close proximity to mass murder, with responses ranging from forced emotional detachment to active endorsement. Ultimately it invites an honest reckoning with the question of how any of us come to look away.
After the screening, you’ll have the rare opportunity to hear directly from producer Mhamad Babai about what it took to get this footage, in a Q&A led by Jewish Council of Australia Community Engagement Director, Ohad Kozminsky.
Mhamad is a documentary producer and activist from Jaffa, whose previous collaboration with Wachsman, Two Kids a Day, won the Best Research Award at the Jerusalem International Film Festival and the Grand Prix Japan Prize.
This is an 18 plus event. The film contains themes and imagery that some viewers may find distressing.
