The Jewish Council of Australia condemns Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s endorsement of the U.S. military strike on Iranian nuclear targets — an illegal act of aggression that threatens to escalate a dangerous regional conflict and lead to more death and suffering. Civilians in Iran and Israel are already paying the horrific price of flagrant breaches of international law.
At a time when Israeli forces continue to bombard Gaza, killing thousands and leaving an already devastated population with no access to food, water, or medical care, the United States’ strike on Iran is a reckless provocation.
Australia’s support for this action makes it complicit in a pattern of military violence that is destabilising the Middle East and fuelling global insecurity.
The US strike on Iran must be understood not as an act of defence, but as an extension of the US and Israel’s efforts to control the region and divert global attention from their mounting war crimes in Gaza.
Dr Max Kaiser, Historian and Executive Officer, Jewish Council of Australia
“The Jewish Council of Australia calls on the Australian Government to immediately withdraw its support for the U.S. strikes, take action to stop Israel’s ongoing atrocities in Gaza, and adopt an independent foreign policy grounded in peace, diplomacy, and international law.”
Sarah Schwartz, Human Rights Lawyer and Executive Officer, Jewish Council of Australia
“We are horrified that the Australian Government would endorse an illegal military strike that risks triggering a broader war. Civilians across the region are already paying the price — it’s time for Australia to break ranks with those driving the violence.”
